Who We Are

SignAble was started in 2019 with the hope of giving a voice to the deaf. We wanted to help the deaf community overcome their daily communication challenges. The minute we hired our first employee, Rupmani, who is deaf;  we realised that there was an urgent need for this solution in the Indian market.

Funded by friends, families and investors; SignAble Communications is a startup company in the assisted technology sector trying to solve communication challenges faced by the deaf. Using our technology, we are able to connect the deaf directly to interpreters at the touch of a button and thereby, enabling them to overcome their daily communication barriers.

Why SignAble?

SignAble works closely with the deaf community to understand their communication needs and help solve the barriers, one at a time. We plan to develop a series of services for the deaf community which will be conceived, run and championed by the deaf. Our SignAble App is the first step towards this larger goal.

Using cutting-edge technology, the SignAble App provides live interpretation in ISL to help the deaf and hearing communicate freely with each other at the touch of a button.

SignAble works with companies to make communicating with deaf employees and customers easier. We also work with the Government, DPOs and NGOs to help build a more inclusive society.

What we do

Using Video Remote Interpretation (VRI) and Video Relay Service (VRS), we provide live interpretation in ISL to help the deaf communicate freely using a mobile app. Ensuring smooth communication, our interpreters form a link between the deaf person and the hearing person.

Our app provides multiple options such as Regular Call, Conference Call and Get an Interpreter. You can also request a Call Back in case the interpreter is not available as well as a same-gender interpreter. We have interpreters who can communicate in 10 Indian languages, offering our users a pan-India experience.

Our Vision

To provide a voice to deaf people in order to help them be better understood, ensure equality in participation in all aspects of life and empower them to make their own choices about their lives and livelihoods.

Our Mission

To make communication between hearing and deaf people accepted and commonplace through the use of the SignAble technology.

  • We seek to integrate offline, online and mobile communication services to make SignAble a one-stop solution for deaf and hearing people who want to communicate with each other.
  • We aim to make education, welfare services and employment accessible to deaf people.
  • We hope to create a social demand from hearing people to learn and use sign language.

Tarun Sarwal

CEO, SignAble Communications

As the CEO at SignAble communications, his own venture, he has created India’s first Video Remote Interpretation service. This enables a deaf person to communicate with a hearing person via a sign language interpreter on a mobile phone.

Prior to founding SignAble, Tarun Sarwal worked with International NGOs and humanitarian organisations for 30 years managing at various times operations, grant-making, policy, emergency response, and innovation. These organisations included the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), British Red Cross, Oxfam, Comic Relief, and Christian Aid. At the ICRC in Geneva, he set up and led one of the first in-house units in the humanitarian sector to facilitate innovation across humanitarian assistance and protection. He was able to develop models for facilitating internal innovation, but also built collaborative partnerships with universities and the corporate sector and brought entrepreneurs to build companies for social innovation within a social impact model.
